Interim engineering talent. Placed fast. Ready to deliver.
The UK is running short of engineers. and businesses that wait for the perfect permanent hire are already behind. SF Engineering Partners places specialist interim and contract talent to keep your projects moving, your operations running and your deadlines met.
The UK engineering sector needs more than 173,000 new engineers and technicians every single year through to 2030 just to meet existing demand, and that's before accounting for the retirement wave already underway. According to the ECITB, around 91,000 engineers and 29,000 technicians will have retired or be close to retiring by 2026. That's nearly one in five of the entire engineering workforce, taking decades of hands-on expertise with them.
The IET's 2025 Skills Survey found that 76% of engineering employers are struggling to recruit for key roles, and only 61% believe their current workforce is fit for the future. Make UK reports that 36% of engineering and manufacturing vacancies are hard to fill due to candidates lacking the right skills, qualifications or experience. That's more than a third of every vacancy. and nearly double the UK average across all industries.
The pipeline isn't catching up quickly enough either. EngineeringUK's analysis of DfE data shows Level 2 engineering apprenticeship starts have fallen 22.6% year-on-year. In the Engineering Maintenance discipline alone, there are nearly 550 vacancies for every one apprentice who qualifies. For Mechanical Engineering, that ratio is 488 to one.
What this means for your business
An unfilled engineering role isn't just a headcount problem. It delays programmes, stretches your existing team, pushes up overtime costs and, in regulated environments , creates compliance risk. Make UK has found that around one in two manufacturers can't source the talent they need locally, and 62% don't expect that to get easier before 2030.
The businesses responding most effectively to this aren't waiting for the market to fix itself. They're building what's increasingly called a blended workforce, permanent hires anchoring strategy and culture, with experienced interim and contract professionals brought in to deliver, cover gaps and keep things moving when permanent timelines aren't an option.
